The previous two days consisted of rubbing against each others' bodies and lots of screaming, with weak knees and exhaustion as a result.
On Friday, my friend Grace and I took a trip to London to finally see a couple of of boys we've been excited to meet since last year, and oh man, did they not disappoint us. Cage The Elephant spoiled us with such a good performance, that I actually came to a point where I thought to myself that there are definitely worse ways to die than through the next mosh pit. Even though there were times were I felt I could neither move nor breath, my hands glued on my body like those of a T-Rex, I still couldn't stop screaming my lungs out and headbang at the same time. The show made our nearly two hour queue in the freezing cold more than worth it, and if anyone asked me if I'd like to do this again, despite the fact that my hair and clothes were drenched in a mixture of sweat and beer, I wouldn't even hesitate to tell you that hell yeah, I would.
We were fortunate enough to be able to stay the night, thanks to Grace's (extremely cool and urban) aunt. As if she wouldn't be great enough for letting us sleep at her place, she was also the one who told us about the Women's March that took place in London the following day. I have to admit that I was a little skeptical in the beginning, thinking that this would be one of those protests only directed at Donald Trump's presidency. Don't get me wrong - I'm not exactly a fan of Donald Trump and neither do I believe that he is adequate to be the new leader of the USA. However, I do believe that he is a reflection of people's frustration, prejudice, lack of knowledge and tolerance, and that it shows us that misinformation and inaccurate representations in the media have contributed to the current attitudes and views of so many people.
This march wasn't about Trump, neither was it about whining about a democratically made decision we don't agree with. It was more about showing that we are afraid the principles of humaneness and fairness are being neglected as a result of 2016's political changes, challenges and media coverage. We want to remind everyone that there are masses of people who want to move towards a more tolerant and united future, and that dividing people based on different beliefs, views or nationalities will never lead us there.
I do understand why people critize the name of the march. Calling it the "Women's March" almost sounds like we believe only women experience injustice all over the world, giving critics of feminism the chance to claim that it is all about turning females into the superior gender. But women and men didn't unite that day to neglect certain groups of people, quite the contrary: it was to remind us all of fundamental human rights everyone deserves. Nevertheless, the problem today is that we often experience that in countries where people face obstacles everyday, women often struggle the most. Through the Women's March, we walked in solidarity for all the women, who have the same dreams and hopes for the future as their counterparts, but will not have the same opportunities to turn it into reality if we just stop fighting for it. I know that feminism is about equality, but sometimes you have to put a little bit more weight on one side of the scale in order for it to stand straight and balanced.
I'm definitely going to post some more pictures from the march and our trip to London on Instagram over the next couple of days, so feel free to check them out if you wish you were there yourself, or just love to leave me a like to make me happy. I also encourage everyone to comment and tell me about their opinions. The march gained so much attention in the media, that I hope it was powerful enough to make people talk about it and challenge each others' opinions. We will never accomplish anything if we don't discuss topics concerning us all, if we keep being silent. It's time to finally speak up- and that includes both parts.
Hope you all had a fantastic weekend, speak to you soon! x
